Dumb

In the news this evening: a battallion of Philippine marines hole up in their Fort Bonifacio headquarters to protest the relief of their commandant.

Meanwhile, in Malacañang, presidential chief of staff Mike Defensor urges media not to “provide exposure” to the dissidents in what’s brewing to be a standoff in Fort Bonifacio.

Hello? Hey, Mike, there’s such a thing as press freedom — specifically, the right against prior restraint. Or is even that not allowed anymore during the de-facto martial law, er, “state of emergency”?

Playing with GPS

I’m playing with a Garmin GPS tracker I borrowed from work. Well, it’s not entirely play because I’m also getting points of interest to be uploaded to the Philippine AgriInfo Map project I’m toying with.

Although a bit worn and old, the device is very easy to use. I’ve gathered a few waypoints, mostly road crossings and bridges for now. Later, I’ll add in establishments such as hospitals, gas stations, malls, among others.

I used MapBuilder to initially plot the points in Google Maps. This is in preparation for an XML-based scheme that I will use for the AgriInfo Map. It’s not much, but it’s a start, so here it is.

GPS waypoints plotted in Google Maps

I’m also thinking of using the GPS to calibrate some of the waypoints Migs Paraz has gathered during his Google Maps Christmas trip using his Smart LBS project. I’ll reserve that for a later trip.
